Wetland Delineator/Field Biologist

We are looking for a Wetland Scientist (or Field Biologist) who has at least 5 years of experience and able to conduct wetland delineations, invasive species surveys, and has knowledge of federal and state environmental protection laws and regulations.  The candidate must be able to lead field work, identify plants, and write field reports.  Generally, our work entails environmental screenings to assist in early project design which include identification of high quality ecological communities or potential habitat for sensitive species using published information and field reconnaissance, identification of regulated resources and making recommendations to the project engineers on appropriate environmental protections, performing wetland delineations, federal, state, and local permitting from Clean Water Act Section 404/401 permits, SEQRA EAFs and floodplain management permits, and environmental compliance inspections for a variety of linear transportation and miscellaneous other projects.

This position is a full time position; however, part-time, contractual, or seasonal positions may also be considered for the right candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct surveys including wetland delineations, invasive species mapping, threatened and endangered species habitat screenings, and tree inventories.
  • Assist with field mapping and data collection with a GPS receiver.
  • Assist with environmental screenings and project reviews, particularly relating to NEPA, SEQR, and the NYSDOT design report preliminary design process.
  • Assist with the development of permit applications including USACE, NYSDEC, and other environmental permitting, as necessary.
  • Assist with environmental compliance inspections for projects during construction.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources or Environmental Sciences. Similar fields will be considered with 5+ years of field experience. 
  • The ability to identify plant and animal species is in the Northeast is required.
  • This position is for an experienced individual with at least 5-7 years of wetland delineation experience in a similar position.
  • Ability to lead field teams and work with minimal guidance, under the overarching supervision of our existing Project Managers.
  • Ability to conduct field investigations during a variety of weather conditions across New York State and potentially neighboring states is required.
  • Previous experience and knowledge of NYSDOT environmental screening and project review procedures, USACE and NYSDEC permitting requirements and regulations, is required.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of rare mollusks is a plus but not required.
  • Experience preparing wetland delineation reports, Joint Permit Applications, and conducting environmental reviews is required.
  • Candidate must have strong attention to detail.
  • Willingness to learn and stay up to date with the ever-changing environmental regulatory landscape.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Experience with Word, Excel, GIS, are required. Experience with AutoCAD/Microstation is a plus.
  • Must have own transportation for purposes of client meetings and site visits. Some travel is to be expected.  Occasional overnight travel and longer work days may be required.

Location:

This position is an in-office position at either our Tonawanda, NY or Victor, NY office locations.  Remote work is a possibility and will be considered for the right candidate.
