SWS Membership Benefits

Meet the new leadership team members!

The summer has flown by and it's time for a new academic year to begin! While you've been gearing up for classes, the Student Section has been preparing to welcome new leaders to our team. I'm excited to introduce you to two outstanding young leaders who are joining our executive board this year. I caught up with Deja and Ryan this month to learn a little more about them.

Deja Newton, Chair-Elect

Where are you from? Ann Arbor, Michigan

What are you studying and what university do you attend? I actually just graduated in May with my bachelor's in environmental science from the University of San Francisco!

What attracted you to join the Student Section leadership team? I liked the inclusivity of the team and I'm passionate about getting more students involved in the section.

Something fun you'd like to share with people: My new hobby is couponing! I love a good deal.

How can people get in touch with you? You can follow me on Twitter and Instagram at @dejachy and my Linkedin is Deja Newton

Ryan Rogers, Undergraduate Representative

Where are you from? Durham, North Carolina

What are you studying and what university do you attend? I'm a senior at Duke University double majoring in environmental science and biology.

What attracted you to join the Student Section leadership team? I was attracted to joining SWS Student Section because I wanted to encourage other biology and environmental science students of color specifically, to consider wetland science as an avenue for research, career, and other opportunities. I'm looking forward to working with the SWS executive board to create an effective and engaging wetland science outreach event geared towards students who may be interested in further exploring or understanding what wetland science is, and how to navigate research and career opportunities.

Something fun you'd like to share with people: I grow Venus Flytraps in my backyard and have gotten stuck chest deep in a Salt Marsh!

How can people get in touch with you? Feel free to reach out to me on Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn
