Summer 2022 Education & Outreach Position

The Chippewa Luce Mackinac Conservation District is seeking qualified candidates for a Summer 2022 Education and Outreach position. The education & outreach position is an opportunity to learn and grow while gaining experience in environmental education/outreach in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula. The education & outreach position will be responsible for planning and providing environmental education opportunities throughout the Chippewa Luce Mackinac Conservation District to both adults and youth. Planning and programing will be completed independently and at times in combination with other District programs and activities. Environmental Education lesson subjects will be led by CLMCD’s mission and organizational goals.


Experiences

  • Work throughout the Eastern Upper Peninsula in the counties of Chippewa, Luce, and Mackinac County which includes scenic locations such as the Straits of Mackinac, Soo Locks, Whitefish Point, Tahquamenon Falls, Hiawatha National Forest, U.S. 2 Lake Michigan Shoreline, Les Cheneaux Islands, and Drummond Island.
  • Ability to utilize concepts learned through your career or degree program to independently design environmental education programing for a diverse population
  • Create a library of Environmental Education programing ideas for future opportunities
  • Opportunity to work with a variety of partners and organizations
  • Assist other staff with presenting outreach/education programs as requested
  • Assist with special events and additional duties as assigned
  • Mange time in a fast past environment

Qualifications

  • Current teacher, instructor, professor, College junior/senior, or graduate student with a major in education with an emphasis in science, natural resources, or environmental education
  • Others may apply, but need to provide details on past jobs or experiences with youth/adult education!
  • Self-starter with a “go getter” personality is a must!
  • Ability to think outside the box
  • Experience working with adults and children in a traditional & non-traditional educational setting as well as recreational/outdoor settings
  • Ability to plan and organize lessons at a high degree of quality and speed
  • Enthusiasm, motivation, and a desire to work with adults and children
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Appropriate footwear is required (e.g., hiking shoes) and outerwear for all weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind)
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Valid State issued driver’s license
  • Reliable personnel transportation
  • Available from mid-May to mid-August (~500 hours) The start date is flexible to accommodate current teachers or students!
  • Ability to take predetermined goals and achieve them by end of internship

Benefits:

  • Hourly wage of $17/hour
  • Mileage if use of personnel vehicle is required
  • Ability to set own schedule


*Please Note: Housing is not provided; however, housing is available through Lake Superior State University Housing Department at chosen intern’s expense.
