Shannon and Wilson is seeking a highly-motivated, self-driven senior level Ecologist/Permit Specialist to expand our natural resources services company wide. The position will be classified as a Senior Professional I-III, based upon experience and qualifications, and will be located in our Seattle, Washington office with opportunities for a flexible work schedule. Candidates should possess extensive experience in providing natural resources services in the Pacific Northwest and an understanding of environmental permitting in Washington State. The candidate will possess a strong technical education, professional demeanor, and a proven record in developing new business to grow the natural resources practices.
Conduct wetland delineations, ordinary high water and high tide line delineations, and other similar field investigations.
Prepare technical reports such as wetland and stream delineation reports and wetland and stream mitigation plans.
Prepare biological assessments for Endangered Species Act consultations.
Prepare permit applications (e.g., Corps 404, HPA, shoreline, 401 WQ Cert, and local critical area permits) and other environmental documents under SEPA and NEPA.
Interact and communicate with clients, vendors, government agencies, and staff at all levels.
Manage all aspects of project under their control, including preparing proposals and cost estimates; maintain client communications and meeting notes; lead and edit technical report writing; perform project oversight and conduct quality control; and manage project budget and revenue development.
Support business development and marketing activities, including preparation of cost proposals and presentations to existing and prospective clients and fostering professional relationships with new and existing clients.
Attend client and company-sponsored meetings, events, and training, as required.
Must be personable, flexible, and professional.
7+ years of direct experience in areas noted above and solid background in fisheries, wetlands, wildlife, and/or restoration.
Experience must include consulting work as an ecologist (or similar) in the Pacific Northwest region.
Understand the environmental permitting process and have the ability to work with regulatory agency personnel.
Wetland training, such as the University of Washington’s Certificate in Wetland Science and Management or similar
Professional Wetland Scientist certification
Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills required to effectively interact with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels.
Certification as a WSDOT Biological Assessment author preferred.
CESCL certification a plus.
Must be able to work independently with appropriate level of supervision.
Must be willing and able to travel to support the needs of other S&W offices.
Must be experienced using the Microsoft Office suite, include Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Sharepoint.
Experience using ESRI ArcGIS to create, import/export, and managing spatial data highly desirable.
This position requires critical thinking and analysis; frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting and carrying 30+ pounds; working in all weather conditions; field visits per project needs; ability to travel to other S&W offices; and ability to drive (or fly) to and from job sites locally and out of state. Must have and maintain a driver license and have an insurable driving record.
Typically, depending on an applicant’s education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, a Senior-Level Ecologist typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Senior Professional II, III, Associate, or Senior Associate level.
