PhD Graduate Research Assistantship - Clemson University
Dr. Amy Scaroni (Forestry and Environmental Conservation) and Dr. Sarah White (Plant and Environmental Sciences) are recruiting a PhD student in applied ecology and remediation science to start either in August 2021 (preferred) or January 2022. Review of candidates begins July 15, 2021 and ends when position is filled. The position will be co-advised by Drs. Scaroni and White. The selected candidate can select from two graduate programs based on their interests and career goals: either Forestry and Environmental Conservation or Plant and Environmental Sciences. Both programs are housed in Clemson University’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences.
Research will center on advancing the science and practice of floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) in brackish systems, with a goal of providing a preliminary understanding of how nutrient dynamics within brackish waters influence FTW plant productivity and contaminant mitigation potential. The PhD student will be part of a larger group of students and faculty investigating various aspects of FTWs, including habitat value, microbial community composition, and plant suitability across nutrient and salinity gradients. The research will include observational and experimental components, carried out both on Clemson’s campus in Clemson, SC and at Clemson’s Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science on the coast in Georgetown, SC.
The selected candidate will also gain experience and expertise in outreach/Extension related to FTWs. The student will co-lead several workshops to install demonstration FTWs with the public. The PhD student will have opportunities to learn and practice outreach/Extension methodologies, and to hone communications skills to enhance utility and delivery of information to stakeholders (written, oral, video, and web-based).
Minimum qualifications: Candidates must have a M.S. degree in biology, plant ecology, environmental science, or related discipline by August 2021.
