We are seeking a Manager, Environmental Permitting who will work closely with project development team members, consultants, and regulators to obtain required environmental approvals for energy projects throughout the United States. This position will be based out of New Jersey to initially support various projects in the northeast.


What you will do...

  • Support the development of large energy infrastructure projects including high-voltage electric transmission lines, substations, energy storage projects, and power generation facilities
  • Provide direction to members of the environmental permitting team
  • Perform due diligence and fatal flaw analyses related to environmental, regulatory, and constructability issues for new project opportunities
  • Develop permitting strategy including identification of required environmental approvals, formulation of permitting schedule, and interview and selection of environmental consultants
  • Develop feasible solutions to permitting challenges
  • Develop and manage permitting budgets and timelines for multiple projects concurrently
  • Solicit and review technical proposals for environmental tasks
  • Manage environmental consultants performing environmental studies, including wetlands, threatened and endangered species, and/or cultural and historical resources
  • Review technical reports prepared by consultants and generate comments to ensure proper representation of scientific principles, regulations, and project objectives
  • Develop and coordinate review of environmental/regulatory permit applications
  • Review engineering drawings for compliance with applicable environmental regulations and consistency with other project documents
  • Build and maintain relationships with permitting agencies and negotiate permit language
  • Assist with the preparation of comprehensive proposals for competitive bids
  • Coordinate with other internal disciplines regarding involvement in public relations, land acquisition, and other project development activities
  • Monitor changes in environmental regulations
  • Travel occasionally to project locations and permitting agencies within the United States



Our ideal candidate will have...

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in an engineering, environmental, or related discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the development, consulting, and/or regulatory sector(s)
  • Experience in permitting energy infrastructure projects (electric transmission lines, power generation facilities, energy storage, natural gas pipelines, etc.) or other types of large-scale projects with specific experience in siting and alternatives analyses
  • Experience with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 10/404 permitting, and state-level environmental regulations
  • Experience with project management tasks, such as preparation and/or review of proposals; managing contracts, including invoicing; and managing staff
  • Demonstrated analytical and negotiating skills
  • Independent work ethic/self-motivation and demonstrated ability to manage permitting on multiple projects/transactions simultaneously
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and negotiation skills with the ability to build relationships with internal staff and external stakeholders
  • Experience working as a solutions-focused team player with the ability to collaborate effectively with a remote team
  • Excellent computer skills (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint, Google Earth, Adobe, GIS)
  • Interest in working in an entrepreneurial organization
