Environmental Scientist

Wildlands Engineering, Inc. is seeking a motivated individual to join our Raleigh, NC office. Duties of the Environmental Scientist will include conducting stream and wetland jurisdictional determinations, stream and wetland assessment, preparing environmental permit applications, technical report writing, and providing scientific and logistical support for stream and wetland restoration projects. The Environmental Scientist’s role will involve both field and office work and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. The Environmental Scientist will also be responsible for coordinating with state and federal agency personnel and working collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities
•Lead field crews in completing jurisdictional determinations
•Collaborate with a team to develop restoration plans and logistics that comply with environmental regulations
•Prepare environmental permit applications and ensure permit conditions are upheld through construction and monitoring
•Design and implement groundwater and stream flow monitoring studies
•Collect and analyze various environmental data; synthesize findings in technical reports
•Effectively communicate and coordinate with team members
•Meet multiple deadlines with a willingness to react positively to changes in priorities

•2 to 4 years of experience related to the key responsibilities and requirements of the job
•Experience delineating streams and wetlands
•Southeastern native and invasive plant identification skills
•Understanding of soil morphology, especially as it pertains to hydric soil development
•Excellent technical report preparation skills
•Collection and interpretation of geospatial data

Preferred Qualifications
•An Understanding of ecological processes important to stream and wetland restoration in the southeastern United States
•Experience with restoration monitoring practices including stream surveying, vegetation sampling, hydrology monitoring, and general early successional ecosystem assessment
•Threatened and endangered species survey experience
•Experience interfacing with landowners and agency officials

Physical Demands
•Ability to work independently in an outdoor setting during all weather conditions
•Ability to work in adverse field conditions including dense vegetation, nuisance insects, poison-ivy, and navigate difficult terrain
•Ability to sustain periods of strenuous physical exertion
•Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
