Assistant Environmental Scientist - Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City)

The assistant environmental scientist will assist with wetland assessments and delineations, vegetative studies, wetland mitigation monitoring, and task management for construction projects in a variety of locations.

  • Assist with wetland assessments and delineations.

  • Collect and analyze Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data using a Global Positioning System (GPS) and ArcGIS software.

  • Assist with field investigations such as habitat evaluations, endangered plant identification and surveys and soil sampling and classification.

  • Compile and analyze field data to compose technical reports.

  • Provide assistance in utilizing GIS data for map production in accordance with standards and industry best practices.

  • Conduct annual wetland mitigation monitoring and post construction compliance inspections.

  • Research and prepare technical reports, environmental assessments and permitting documents.

  • Gather data and prepare applications for various regulatory approvals.

  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Botany, Soil Science or a related field from an accredited program required. Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Prior internship or natural science field experience preferred.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Basic knowledge of GPS and working in the ArcGIS desktop environment.

  • Basic plant identification skills.

  • Basic knowledge of wetlands and aquatic resources.

  • Basic knowledge of the environmental permitting process.

  • Ability to clearly communicate both verbal and written technical information.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

  • Must be proficient in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Valid driver's license required. In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.
